Joomla! 1.5 Multimedia by Allan Walker

One of the strengths of Joomla! is it's ease of use, allowing non technical administrators to publish their content in a user friendly way.  However, there is still a learning curve to overcome to really get the most out of Joomla!.  In addition, there may be some tasks that administrators have assumed that only a professional web developer can do for them, when perhaps an extension exists to make that task very easy.  Joomla! 1.5 Multimedia by Allan Walker is a new book released by Packt Publishing, aimed at Joomla! administrators who want to publish media-rich content.  Here's a sample chapter.

The book serves as introduction to Joomla! from the point of view of practical, commonly used multimedia solutions. It covers the fundamentals of what constitutes multimedia elements on the web, and how to manage these elements in Joomla!.  Whether its images, galleries, slide shows, audio, or videos, this book provides quick and easy solutions to getting your multimedia content on line.  It does this by highlighting some of the most popular, and powerful Joomla! multimedia extensions available.  In addition, it covers concepts such as FTP and Media Manager, to help administrators to upload content, no matter what type or file size.

You'll also learn about how your website can leverage external resources such as YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, and Google.  Need to change some fonts on your site?  This book overviews the most commonly used web fonts, and provides step by step instructions to change these.  These might be things you assumed you would not be able to do, and would need to hire a professional.  I think you'll be surprised at just how much you can do on your own, with the help of a few good extensions, and a book like this to guide you.

Often I meet people who have inherited a Joomla! based site, or their organization has recently adopted Joomla!, and now it's their job to 'figure it out'.  If their background does not include web design or development, it may seem overwhelming to them at first.  There's so much information out there, it's hard for them to filter out what they need from the general noise.  This is where an introduction level book like this will help, especially for people who want to publish media-rich content.  Not only will it provide the general background information, it provides some practical, commonly needed solutions.
